Ole Miss beat Georgia 39-34 in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2026, scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter and winning on a 47-yard field goal with six seconds left. It was the best game of the quarterfinal round and the first Playoff semifinal berth in Ole Miss history.

The comeback

Georgia found its footing after a slow start and used a 21-6 run to build a nine-point halftime lead. For most of three quarters the Bulldogs looked like the more complete team, which matched the expectation — they had entered as a six-and-a-half point favorite and had beaten Ole Miss already that season.

Then the fourth quarter arrived and Ole Miss scored 20 points in it. Trinidad Chambliss finished with 362 passing yards and two touchdowns. Two Rebels receivers cleared 120 yards. The defense made a critical late stop when it had to.

Lucas Carneiro

The Ole Miss kicker made three long field goals in the game, the last from 47 yards with six seconds on the clock for the win.

It was the start of a remarkable two-week stretch. Across the Sugar Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl semifinal a week later, Carneiro connected from 55, 56 and 58 yards, range that is unusual at any level of football. He kicked four field goals against Miami, including one that briefly put Ole Miss ahead in the fourth quarter of that game too.

Revenge, specifically

Georgia had handed Ole Miss its only regular-season loss. The Sugar Bowl was the rematch, in New Orleans, with a semifinal at stake. Beating the team that had beaten you, in January, is the cleanest version of a season redeeming itself.

For Georgia, the loss was the second straight postseason in which the Bulldogs were eliminated in a New Year's Six bowl. Kirby Smart's program had been the sport's most consistent for most of a decade without adding to its title count since 2022.

The quarterfinal round in context

January 1, 2026 produced three quarterfinals with radically different characters. Oregon shut out Texas Tech 23-0 in the Orange Bowl. Indiana dismantled Alabama 38-3 in the Rose Bowl. And the Sugar Bowl gave the round its only genuine thriller.

The Sugar Bowl drew 18.7 million viewers, third among the four quarterfinals behind the Rose and Cotton Bowls. It was comfortably the best football of the four.

The ceiling

Ole Miss took Miami to the final seconds in the Fiesta Bowl and lost 31-27 despite holding the ball for barely a third of the game. The Rebels finished the season one score short of a national championship appearance, with a quarterback who threw for over 350 yards in a quarterfinal and a kicker who was automatic from anywhere inside 60 yards.

Whether Ole Miss can get back there is the open question. But the 2025 season put the program in a place it had never been, and the Sugar Bowl was the game that did it.
